As the homeschooling year draws to an end it’s time to start gathering together materials for next year and evaluating what worked this year and what needs some improvement. One resource we have really enjoyed is the Drive Thru History DVD’s. (This blog uses affiliate links)
Our family has been using Illuminations by Bright Ideas press for about a year now. One major benefit is that by using the Illuminations Scheduler I was able to plan out our entire year’s worth of lesson plans in under 5 minutes. (I showed you how I did that here.) Now that the year is coming to a close I can tell you that I never had to go back and do more planning. Those first 5 minutes was all it took. After that I simply opened the software each week, printed off the Master Schedule I had oringally created and we had our weekly work all laid out for us. It was so incredibly easy!
The other thing I really liked about Illuminations was the wide variety of supplemental resources they recommended. Everything they suggested turned out to be high quality material that my family. The “spine” of the program is the Mystery of History textbook. We were studying ancient history this year. On family movie nights we would break out the popcorn and watch the corresponding episodes from Drive Thru History: Ancient History DVD set!
Drive Thru History: Ancient History Giveaway!
Drive Thru History has graciously partnered with me to give away one set of the Ancient History DVD’s. These 4 DVD’s each contain three 30-minute episodes. The episodes are geared towards middle school, but contain enough information that they are interesting for adults and they are entertaining enough to keep the attention of younger children as well. I really appreciated that the series explains history from a Biblical Worldview and puts Bible stories into context.
Here is the trailer for the Ancient History series so you can get a feel for David Stotts’ style:
A word of caution: The programs on Rome, Greece and Turkey contain some nudity that was a disappointing for our family. Generally the nudity is in depictions of the various pagan gods. I strongly advise previewing the episodes so that you know when to turn your screen off or tell your children to avert their eyes. There is also breif nudity in the “best of Drive Thru History” segment on the East Meets West DVD.
Otherwise, the graphics are well done and the information presented is entertaining and memorable.
